Hop over by ferry to Raymond Island from Paynesville and follow the Koala Trail. Then visit the township of Walhalla, tucked deep into a valley, where a treasure trove of history is waiting to be uncovered. Surrounded by lush forests it’s the perfect spot for fishing, camping and off-the-beaten track exploring. Continue to Wilsons Promontory where you’ll find a labyrinth of walking trails crisscrossing through shady fern gullies and eucalypt forest. Drive through the hills of South Gippsland, then make your way to Phillip Island, where a highlight of your trip will be seeing the penguins waddling ashore at dusk. MELBOURNE Make your final drive to Melbourne, Australia’s favourite city for café culture, fashion, art, sport, and an amazing array of cuisine to please any palate.

COASTAL NEW SOUTH WALES As you continue south, take a detour to Pebbly Beach, where you’ll likely find kangaroos and wallabies playing in the surf. When you reach Narooma hop on a wildlife cruise to Montague Island. This nature reserve is home to fur seals, sea eagles and is a real haven for wildlife. Make your way along the aptly named Sapphire Coast, one of the true hidden treasures on this drive. Sample fresh seafood at Bermagui Fisherman’s Wharf and delve into the region’s rich history at Bega Pioneers Museum. Explore Mimosa Rocks National Park before arriving in Merimbula where you can end the day with a gentle sunset stroll along the Merimbula Boardwalk. Continue your journey south to the old whaling town of Eden, which sits proudly on the ‘Humpback Highway’.

This is a drive of quiet seaside towns, surf beaches and ancient ranges draped in lush green forests and a profusion of national parks. Where you can follow rainforest wilderness trails, taste the freshest seafood and delight in native wildlife. JERVIS BAY Exchange the urban views of Sydney for the natural wonders of the coast as you begin the drive south. Stretch your legs in Kiama, with the gentle amble to the famed blow hole and then turn inland for a treetop meander through the rainforest canopy on the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk. Then head to Jervis Bay. Here, you’ll find glorious white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise waves and cycling trails galore, plus a pod of resident dolphins that play in the bay.
