TE ANAU & QUEENSTOWN Drive to Lumsden and then through Mossburn to Te Anau. From here, the delights of Fiordland National Park are within easy reach. Walk the tracks, explore Te Anau Glowworm Caves, and a cruise on Milford Sound is a must. With mountains as far as the eye can see and crisp alpine air, Queenstown is breathtaking. Whether you have an appetite for adventure or prefer sampling fine wine and cuisine, this region provides the perfect mix of action and relaxation. There is a multitude of ways to explore this area from cycling to hiking, or thrill-seekers may want to try jet-boating or bungy jumping. AORAKI/MOUNT COOK NATIONAL PARK Head to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, home of New Zealand’s highest mountain. Along the way, you’ll pass the Northwest Arch, in Ōmarama, a popular gliding thermal that can take glider pilots to 10,000 metres. Lake Pukaki accompanies you from Twizel. Heli-skiing and heli-hiking are popular here or discover the area by foot on the hiking trails. On your way back to Christchurch, stop at Tekapo where you can enjoy a whole raft of activities.

OAMARU & DUNEDIN Drive to Oamaru, with the Southern Alps providing the backdrop. Oamaru is a town of elegant sandstone buildings, that make up the fascinating Victorian precinct. The harbour is also home to a colony of penguins, which you can watch waddle ashore in the evening.

Travelling on to Dunedin, stop at Moeraki, to view the mysterious spherical boulders scattered on the shore. Dunedin has an impressive amount of Victorian architecture, enjoy the historic public buildings and imposing churches. Head out to the Otago Peninsula where you can see penguins and seals. INVERCARGILL & STEWART ISLAND Travel south to Invercargill via Balclutha. The winding road will take you to see seals, Hector’s dolphins, and a petrified forest in Curio Bay. The country’s southernmost city is brimming with elegant streets amidst the pretty gardens of Queens Park. Cross Foveaux Strait by ferry to Stewart Island and enjoy nature at its wildest. Highlights include spotting kiwis on Ocean Beach and a visit to Ulva Island.
