LET US TAKE YOU ON A JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD

Here at Travelbag, we love a good read. And what better book to be inspired by than Around The World In 80 Days by French writer Jules Verne. First published back in 1872, it still excites travellers and

adventurers today. The tale follows the journey of Phileas Fogg and his valet, Passepartout, in their attempt to travel the world in 80 days, on a wager of £20,000 set by his friends

at the Reform Club. Whilst the journey today would look quite different, the story inspired us to take you on a journey around the world. Then you can start planning an adventure of a lifetime.

VIETNAM? VA-VA-VOOM. Vietnam is a country of contrasts, where energetic cities and lantern-lit towns mingle with sleepy beaches and limestone islands. Although the North and South have been one unified country since 1975, they still have their differences. So, to get the most out of your trip, we’d recommend ticking off the five Hs – take a look.

HOI AN

HANOI

Picturesque Hoi An is the poster child of Vietnam. Once a major port, Hoi An boasts a range of architecture, including Chinese temples, traditional Japanese merchant houses, an 18th-century bridge, and canary-coloured houses. There are lots of great snorkelling spots within easy reach, too. But Hoi An’s real charm emerges after dark, when hundreds of multi coloured lanterns give the town a magical, romantic feel.

Vietnam’s lively capital is a medley of scooters, street food stalls, and bright lights. And yet, across the city, you’ll find little pockets of calm. Visit the Temple of Literature, where you can stroll around tranquil courtyards, altars and ponds. Hoan Kiem Lake should also be on your list. Walk over the bright red bridge to reach Ngoc Son Temple, which is perched on an island in the middle of the lake.

Vietnam has eight UNESCO Sites, but Ha Long Bay is the most famous. Covering 600 square miles, this vast bay has nearly 2,000 islands. You can go on a daytrip from Hanoi but, if you’d like more time, we’d recommend an overnight cruise. Sail between the islands, kayak through hidden caverns, and swim in the turquoise waters. You’ll also spy tiny floating villages, surrounded by fishing boats.

Halfway down Vietnam’s lengthy coastline, Hue – which is pronounced “whey” – was the country’s capital between 1802 and 1945, and is home to a collection of impressive landmarks. The ornate Thien Mu Pagoda is a wonder to behold, while the grand interior of the Tomb of Khai Dinh is a must-see. But the UNESCO-recognised Imperial City is sure to be the highlight, where age-old walls encircle a cluster of temples and palaces.

Immerse yourself in the poignant exhibits at the War Remnants Museum. Crawl through the famous Củ Chi Tunnels – an underground network dug by Viet Cong guerrilla soldiers during the VietnamWar. And admire the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, which was built by French colonists in 1880.

LEOPARDS

ELEPHANTS

Shy and elusive, but not to be underestimated, the leopard is Sri Lanka’s top predator. Much like a human fingerprint, the markings on their silky, black-spotted coats are unique to every creature. But, their piercing, golden eyes are a unanimous feature. Even in their native country numbers are low, but you might just see one at Yala or Wilpattu National Park, gracefully prowling through the grounds.

With their heart-shaped heads and rounded ears, the mighty Sri Lankan elephant is the epitome of a gentle giant. They’re found throughout the country, but it’s estimated that up to 1,000 live within the boundaries of Udawalawe National Park. Here, matriarchs are often spotted stomping along the lush grass, their calves following closely in their shadow.

SLOTH BEARS

BLUE WHALES

One of Sri Lanka’s most misunderstood species, the sloth bear can be found in both Yala and Wilpattu National Park. In some accounts, they’re characterised as ferocious – even deadly. But, unprovoked, these funny-looking mammals have a mellow nature. They spend their time digging up juicy ants and rustling among the treetops in search of berries to eat.

Both the largest and the loudest animal on the planet, blue whales have been known to brush past Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Despite their colossal size, they weave effortlessly through the ocean – occasionally poking above the surface to fill their lungs with air. Visit in February or March, and you can set out from the shores of Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s south coast in pursuit of a lucky glimpse.

SRI LANKA Nicknamed ‘India Lite’, Sri Lanka has all the culture and charm of its enormous neighbour, but the pace of life here is far more sedate. You can visit ancient Polonnaruwa – Sri Lanka’s second capital – and see temples and palaces as they once were, and find out about a bygone era that paved the way for Sri Lankan culture today. Sigiriya Rock is another must-see. Surrounded by rich jungle, this tall fortress has 1,200 steps up to the top, where sweeping views await. You can visit tea plantations in the cool hills, and explore Sri Lanka’s national parks in search of wildlife. You’ll be able to see elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and an abundance of birds.

This majestic forest is made up of ancient Tingle trees, some of which are more than 400 years old. To really take it all in, we’d recommend strolling along the Treetop Walk. NATURAL WONDERS In the Northern Territory, you can discover Kakadu National Park. Dual-listed by UNESCO for its outstanding cultural and natural values, the park is home to Yellow Water Billabong, which weaves through the wetlands and marshes. With sailings from sunrise to sunset, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to admire the ever-changing scenery. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles, buffalo and native birds, including eagles and jabirus – a handsome stork, with a black head, neck and beak. Elsewhere, in South Australia, Kangaroo Island is famous for its free-roaming native wildlife. Just a 30-minute scenic flight or ferry-ride from Adelaide, this unique isle is home to koalas, echidnas, wallabies, rare Australian sea lions, and – as its name suggests – plenty of ’roos. On the island’s coast, you might also be lucky enough to spot lazy seals, playful dolphins, and migrating whales. TRAVELBAG TIPS One of our Travel Specialists, Liam, visited Peru in 2022. He said, “ Peru has always been high on my list, and it did not disappoint! I loved it all, from Lima’s rugged coast, to the heart of the Amazon, to the cobbled streets of Cusco. But Machu Picchu was the highlight for me. It really is as breath-taking as the photos make it out to be, and I feel very lucky to have seen it in person .”

MALDIVES

“Visiting the Maldives was a brilliant experience. I stayed at Emerald Maldives, and was lucky enough to go on a dolphin-watching cruise, snorkel on the house reef, and enjoy a wine-tasting with the hotel’s very own sommelier. The desert island experience was amazing, too, as there’s nothing but ocean in every direction.” Stephen, Travel Specialist “I knew Dubai would be amazing, but it was even better than I imagined. The resorts are just in a league of their own. My personal highlight was the dune safari. We drove across the desert, watched the sunset while sitting on the dunes, then visited a Bedouin camp where we enjoyed a barbecue, drinks, and cultural performances.” Danny, Travel Specialist DUBAI

ST LUCIA

“I was really impressed by St Lucia. I’d highly recommend the sulphur springs guided tour, followed by the mud baths. It was also great to tour the cocoa plantations at Project Chocolat, and learn more about Hotel Chocolat’s sustainable methods. And, if you love hiking, the famous Pitons have some amazing trails.” Lucian, Travel Specialist

FIJI

“Fiji had everything I expected from an island paradise – powder soft sands, swaying palms, dramatic peaks, turquoise waters, and sunsets that stopped me in my tracks. But what I loved most was the people. Everywhere you go, you’re greeted by friendly faces, big smiles, and shouts of ‘bula!’ which means ‘welcome’ in Fijian.” Thea, Destination Manager
