SRI LANKA SAFARI? SORTED. Some visit for the palm laden beaches, whilst others dream of exploring without witnessing some extraordinary wildlife. And, as you might imagine, it’s what keeps people coming back for more. Best time to visit Sri Lanka’s east coast shines between May and October, while the west is best from December to April Time difference GMT +5:30 Flight time from UK Around 10 hours ancient temples and fragrant tea fields. But few leave Sri Lanka

LEOPARDS

ELEPHANTS

Shy and elusive, but not to be underestimated, the leopard is Sri Lanka’s top predator. Much like a human fingerprint, the markings on their silky, black-spotted coats are unique to every creature. But, their piercing, golden eyes are a unanimous feature. Even in their native country numbers are low, but you might just see one at Yala or Wilpattu National Park, gracefully prowling through the grounds.

With their heart-shaped heads and rounded ears, the mighty Sri Lankan elephant is the epitome of a gentle giant. They’re found throughout the country, but it’s estimated that up to 1,000 live within the boundaries of Udawalawe National Park. Here, matriarchs are often spotted stomping along the lush grass, their calves following closely in their shadow.

SLOTH BEARS

BLUE WHALES

One of Sri Lanka’s most misunderstood species, the sloth bear can be found in both Yala and Wilpattu National Park. In some accounts, they’re characterised as ferocious – even deadly. But, unprovoked, these funny-looking mammals have a mellow nature. They spend their time digging up juicy ants and rustling among the treetops in search of berries to eat.

Both the largest and the loudest animal on the planet, blue whales have been known to brush past Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Despite their colossal size, they weave effortlessly through the ocean – occasionally poking above the surface to fill their lungs with air. Visit in February or March, and you can set out from the shores of Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s south coast in pursuit of a lucky glimpse.
