Ready, set, Sri Lanka. To kick things off, your driver will take you from Columbo to Sri Lanka’s cultural hub, Kandy. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can stroll around Kandy Lake, which King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe famously constructed, or explore the Temple of The Tooth, all before watching a traditional Kandyan performance in the evening - and this is only your first day! The next morning, feast on a delicious breakfast, head to Peradeniya’s Royal Botanical Gardens, and then make tracks for Sri Lanka’s Hill Country – home to the renowned city of Nuwara Eliya. You’ll sample authentic tea at Ceylon’s famous tea factory, and nearby, Sri Lanka’s tallest peak, Pidurutalagala, is a hiker’s paradise. Continuing your journey, up next is Horton Plains National Park – due to the foggy conditions here, it’s best to arrive early. Grasslands, cloud forests, and a variety of plants and animals form a plateau that sits 2,000 metres above sea level. However, this stops abruptly at the World’s End drop - this 870-metre vertical escarpment is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural wonders. Hop aboard a train and return to Nuwara Eliya to mingle with Sri Lankan locals and try some traditional tea-making.
Elephant adventure? We’re all ears! Enjoy a scenic drive through the highlands to Udawalawe, watching out for the cascading waterfall named Ravana Ella. When you arrive, you’ll visit its Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephants are rescued, before heading on an exhilarating, elephant-focused safari through Udawalawe National Park. It’s your fifth day and time for a safari in Yala National Park, which spans 400 square miles. It’s impressively home to the world’s largest number of leopards, alongside sloth bears, spotted deer, elephants, wild boar, and more; the list of animals here is impressive. You’ll travel to Galle, a city boasting a mix of British, Portuguese, and Dutch cultures. It is now a thriving holiday destination, so you can look forward to plenty of activities, beaches, hotel accommodations, and its stunning historic Fort and New Town. After exploring Galle, head to Colombo Airport, go to another location, or extend your adventure with a beachfront stay here. The choice is yours.
