Mauritius’ biggest national park, Black River Gorges’ lush forest and undulating hills cover just two per cent of the island’s total surface. With more than 50 kilometres of trails, from challenging ascents to easy forest rambles, the park is every hiker’s dream. Home to the highest point in Mauritius in the form of the Black River Peak, at 828 metres above sea level, the summit offers some of Mauritius’ most spectacular views. We’d also highly recommend making time for the well-signposted Alexandra Falls viewpoint, where you’ll get epic views of both the waterfall and the park.
Chamarel Waterfall is fed by three streams that filter into the Saint-Denis River. Our tip? Pull on your hiking boots and make the three-hour trek to the base for a rewarding swim in the pool and the chance to experience the spray of the waterfalls up close. Hire an expert guide to lead you through the tropical rainforest and enlighten you en route to the area’s birdlife, waterfalls, and geology. You can watch the twin waterfalls tumble over the basalt cliff and drop around 100 metres into the oval pool below. While the water is what draws your eye, the volcanic rock shouldn’t be overlooked. These layers date back eight to 10 million years!

Things to do
LE MORNE
SEVEN COLOURED EARTH The sand dunes have layers of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow sand, revealing 600 million years of geology. The geopark is around eight and a half hectares and is home to geology education and conservation. There’s a coffee shop and restaurant here, and it’s good to twin Seven Coloured Earth Geopark with Chamarel Waterfall, as you’ll see the waterfall on the drive up to the sand dunes. Chamarel Waterfall is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius, and you can photograph it from the viewpoint!
CATAMARAN CRUISE
Wake up before dawn, slide out of bed, pull on your hiking boots and check you have all the essentials for the morning’s adventure. The climb up Le Morne Brabant will be roughly a three-hour hike with an expert guide as the soft morning sunlight casts its rays over the ocean. The last stage feels more like a rocky climb to the summit, and as you make that final push, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of reefs and lagoons from the top of the mountain.
Laze in a net above glistening waters as you whip across the ocean, gazing out at lush islands and white sand beaches. Drop anchor at secluded spots to swim and snorkel, then jump back on board to tuck into a tropical lunch of fresh salads and juicy fruits. Choose between a private or a shared catamaran; if you’re lucky, you might even see huge pods of dolphins.
