collects you and you head out of the city, travel through Braulio Carrillo National Park and then through an area of banana plantations to a pier. Hop on a boat and sail along the canals to Mawamba Lodge in Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Whilst in Tortuguero, enjoy a guided walk through the tropical rainforest and explore the quaint town. The next day, head back out on the water and explore the canals further. This time, look out for caimans, monkeys, and sloths. This area is also home to endangered species such as jaguars, tapirs and manatees, so if you are lucky, you might spot one of these. The next destination calls as you travel towards Arenal Volcano in the town of La Fortuna. Spend a whole day at leisure in La Fortuna and enjoy the many attractions. We recommend going to the hanging bridges park to spot animals, zip-line through the treetops, and relax at a hot spring. There is also a great selection of bars and restaurants in the town, so make sure you check them out. Finally, head to Monteverde, a scenic spot surrounded by mystical cloud forest. Explore at your leisure. If you didn’t zip-line in La Fortuna, don’t worry, as there are also opportunities to do that here, or go out in search of hummingbirds, butterflies and sloths. This itinerary

then takes you back to San Jose for one final night; however, there is the option to extend your trip and relax on the west coast. See our selection of hotels on pages 102 and 103.
