With 600 kilometres of coastline, beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, and delicious wine, Uruguay is one of South America’s best-kept secrets. Starting in Montevideo, explore a modern city with European influences, taste wine at a nearby vineyard and visit the Pittamiglio Castle. Next, head to Punta del Este, a glamorous beach resort. Visit the Ralli Museum of Contemporary Art to see paintings and sculptures by popular Latin American artists, stop at Punta Ballena for sweeping views and ride through the dunes in a special vehicle on a day trip to Cabo Polonio. Sample more wine at a boutique winery in the Uruguayan countryside and then head back to Montevideo for an overnight stop before heading to the next destination. Spend a couple of nights in Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Uruguay’s oldest city. The last stop is Carmelo, where you can once again sample wine, this time paired with cheeses and hams. Return to Montevideo for one last night before you fly home.

URUGUAY ROAD TRIP Montevideo | Mariscala | Chuy | Valizas | Montevideo Uruguay might be the second-smallest country in South America, but it has a lot to offer, from beautiful landscapes and excellent wine to historic cities. Starting in Montevideo, the coastal capital city, explore the street markets, quaint shops and stunning architecture. On day two, pick up a car hire and drive northeast to enjoy a stay at a posada (inn or lodging house) just outside of Mariscala. On the move again, head to Chuy in the Rocha region. Explore the curious town of Chuy, located on the Brazil border. Visit the National Park San Miguel, a nature reserve with a diverse ecosystem and home to capybaras, otters, wild cats, flamingos, and owls. After a few days, get back on the road and head along the coastline. On the way, take some time to stop at Piriápolis Beach or the Isla de Lobos. In Valizas, relax on the beach, or if you’d like to explore, head to Bosque de Ombues to see the centuries-old trees. The itinerary ends with one night back in Montevideo before flying home.
